Womens Weekend 2006

We had a great weekend at the womens ‘camp.’ I enjoy the company of my own gender, I understand the things they want to talk about ~ or not talk about. There is friendship in walking together, sitting chatting together and blobbing out together in front of a dvd, watching it for the 3rd time because someone hasn’t seen it yet. There is beauty in singing together, joy in laughing together, warmth in holding another’s baby, or giving a hug to someone needing it, memories in watching as a new baby is ‘plugged in’ for a feed ~ and yes, it is scary when another new baby is born within 15 minutes of arriving at the hospital, 3 days after the weekend finishes, what if it had happened ………..!

I found the Speaker absorbing, she was the kind of person I could enjoy coffee with on a regular basis.

She told of a traffic cop, sitting outside a hotel waiting for the patrons to leave at closing time so he could pick up any drunk drivers, before they could do any damage by driving home under the influence. As he watched a man left the bar, staggered to his car fumbling for his keys. He leaned over his bonnet searching through his pockets, as other people started to leave the bar. He finally found his keys, lurched to the drivers door searching for the lock. The cop watched in anticipation, here was one drunk who was going to blow in his bag tonight.

The drunk was having trouble getting the keys in the lock. Slowly he realised that it was not his car and went off searching. The cars leaving avoided hitting him and he finally found the car he was looking for. He dropped his keys, scrabbled around on the ground for a while, got back up and managed to open his car door; still the cop watched and waited.

Not too many cars left in the car park now which was just as well, the car lurched backwards, bunny hopped forwards, slewed around; the car park was empty he could do what he liked, until he was on the road. As soon as he was out of the gate the officer went into action. Lights on, he signaled the drunk to stop.

Approaching the car he asked the drunk to blow in the bag. The man obliged but the crystals showed no evidence of alcohol present. Believing the bag must be faulty the officer asked the man to accompany him to the station for a blood test. “Certainly officer,” the man replied, “but no need really, you see I am the decoy.”

How often do we concentrate on the decoys in life and miss the real focus!
And can we recognise the decoys?

What decoy keeps you from spending time with God each day, or keeps you from Church, or prevents you praying with a friend, or fills your mind for longer periods than it should.

Maybe you are even decoyed into Christian service at the cost of ‘Christ time.’

I don’t know the answer for you but maybe you do.

Yes, this Womens Weekend was of lasting value for sure.

A God Moment

Am being kept busy these days with a Ladies Weekend almost upon us.

But today, long may it remain in my memory! We had a young Japanese man in our English class. This was the second time he had been and he said he was returning to Japan so it was also his last one. Both Maureen and I had taught him so we both spoke with him before he left. Incidentally he said he had been to an English class every week day, different churches have them just as we do, and our was the best, ah well it was nice we obviously hit a chord with him any way.
As he stood around outside talking I gave him a Japanese/English New Testament. I showed him the Japanese language on one half of the page and the English on the other. He held it to his face in both hands in a very reverent way. So reverent that I asked him if he was Christian but no, he wasn't. Then he said, "To think I have only been here 2 weeks and you would give me this!" His gratitude was amazing to witness.
God speed N and may the Word you hold in your hands grow in your heart to a multiplying harvest!
