Easter ~ a Major Risk!
‘While we were still sinners Christ died for the ungodly.’ Romans 5:6
As a young teen I passed a Gospel Hall on my way to school and this scripture was on a notice board outside for all to read. I read it but could not quite fathom what it actually meant or how it was to be applied.
Recently, in reading it again, I seemed to gather some insight into the enormity of what it could mean.
I see the Godhead in sombre conversation regarding the sin of mankind. It had not been the plan that man would sin but it was a risk taken when God created mankind in His own image, and therefore with a free will to choose in every situation.
A major choice had come to Adam and Eve and they had sinned, whatever explanations can be put to the scene, the bottom line is that they had disobeyed and therefore sinned.
And so the Godhead was in deep conversation: What was to be done?
Forever now sin would be a part of creation. The wages of sin is death ~ eternal death ~ how could the situation be rectified?
Only with a blood sacrifice.
If all people born would eventually sin then they must all die and no one could pay the price for anyone else. A sinless sacrifice could pay that price because that person need not die, so could therefore die on behalf of others.
Would a perfect animal do? Animals do not have a soul so do not actually sin. It could be a good half measure but not a perfect solution, for mankind would continue to sin, and the animal blood would only pay for past sins but not deliver from the bondage to continue sinning.
It will take a part of us to do it the Godhead knew!
Solution:
The Word could be called a Son, be born as a man, live as a man, be in every area tempted to sin like any person is and, if He remained without sin, He could, as an adult in His prime, be sacrificed as a scapegoat for all men throughout all ages.
Sounds the perfect solution!
BUT what if no one saw the value of what He had done and no one chose to accept the supreme sacrifice that was being made. What if it all just drifted into history and was overlooked and disregarded, what if the whole idea was so outrageous as to be unbelievable and therefore not accepted by anyone at any time??
The Spirit of the Godhead could prompt and urge people but with their freewill choice they could disregard the gift offered. The sacrifice of the Word of the Godhead could come to absolutely nothing, could be of no value at all without a response from sinful mankind individually.
Was it worth the risk?
And the Godhead concluded that to save just one it was indeed worth the risk.
IT WORKED! I am glad to say it worked!
Because, you see, ‘While I was still a sinner Christ died for the ungodly, Elizabeth.’
He took the risk or there would have been no redemption available.
